  Silverlight is WPF/E (Windows Presentation Foundation) rebranded, and is based on .NET
  
  Because of this they can't really open source it, maybe just some non-essential libraries.
  
  Adobe has opened their compiler and debugger; I really doubt MS is going to open their C# compiler (it is free as part of the .NET Framework, but not open AFAIK)

  Humbug basically, let MS spread misinformation and let me concentrate on my work. I wonder why they have omitted for example the number of discovered vulnerabilities in the .NET framework versus the Flex framework (or entire Flash platform for that matter).

  Microsoft tends to discover and fix their security vulnerabilities quite quick now, they have certainly improved a lot in that area, its just that some people still do not want to believe it. On the server side .NET is certainly nothing worse than PHP in terms of security.
  Unlike the browser war back then I feel that we will be the winners this time, having companies battling for our preference and improving their products. Both competitors have learned from the past.
